How to use the Image to STL
- 1Choose a PNG, JPG or WebP image. Logos and line art on a light background work best.
- 2Set the width in millimeters; the depth follows the image proportions.
- 3Set base thickness and total height. Dark areas rise to the total height.
- 4Adjust detail and smoothing, then check the preview.
- 5Download the STL and slice it like any other model.
Tips for a clean print
- Use contrast. Convert photos to black and white with strong contrast before uploading.
- Mind the detail setting. A 0.4 mm nozzle cannot reproduce features much smaller than about 0.4 mm, so a finer grid mostly adds file size.
- Print flat. Reliefs print well flat on the bed with no supports. Smaller layer heights give smoother slopes.
- Two colors: pause or swap filament at the layer where the raised design starts for a two-tone sign.
Image to STL vs lithophane
A relief is viewed by reflected light, so the design stands out from the surface. A lithophane is a thin panel viewed with a light behind it; thickness controls how much light passes through. For backlit photos, use the lithophane maker instead.
Frequently asked questions
How does image to STL conversion work?
Each pixel becomes a point on a 3D surface whose height depends on its brightness. Dark pixels are raised by default, which suits logos and line art on a light background. The result is a closed, printable solid with a flat base.
Can I convert a PNG or JPG to STL?
Yes. PNG, JPG and WebP all work. PNGs with a transparent background are ideal: transparent areas stay flat at the base height.
Will a photo turn into a full 3D model?
No. This tool makes a relief (a 2.5D surface), like an embossed sign or coin. Turning a photo of an object into a full 3D model requires AI reconstruction, which is a different process.
What image works best?
High-contrast images with clean edges: logos, silhouettes, text and line drawings. Increase smoothing for noisy JPEGs or photos.
Is the image uploaded?
No. The image is decoded and converted by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
